Raising a kid is expensive. If you're lucky, the most intense financial burden won't be felt until your kid is ready to go off to college. When I started college, I had to take out student loans and ten years later, I am still paying on them. I didn't want this for my kids, so I knew that planning for college many years before they would need the money is the only way to avoid running into financial problems later or making my kids pay for their education on their own.
